# Points

> How customers earn points, redeem them, and what happens when you refund an order.

Every Habit program shares one points ledger. Purchases, referrals, and VIP multipliers all write to the same balance.

## Earn on purchase

When an order is paid, Habit credits points using your **points per dollar** rate.

Example: if the rate is 1 point per $1 and a customer spends $48, they earn 48 points. VIP multipliers apply on top of that rate.

Points only post after the order is paid. Drafts and unpaid checkouts do not earn.

## Redeem at checkout

Customers spend points as a checkout discount. The conversion uses your **redemption rate** (points per \$1 off), plus any minimum balance and maximum percent of the order you set.

See [checkout redemption](/program/checkout) for the customer flow.

## Refunds reverse points automatically

If you refund an order, Habit reverses the points that order earned. You do not need to adjust the ledger by hand.

If those points were already spent, the customer's balance can go negative until future purchases cover it. Habit does not silently delete later redemptions.

## Points expiry

Optionally set **points expiry days** in Settings. Unused points expire after that many days of inactivity. Leave the field empty to keep points indefinitely.
